Photography tips for REI - Improve your Mountainbike Photography Skills

I was honored recently when REI contacted me about writing a series of tutorials for their members on how they could improve their photography skills. Over the past few months, I've covered three other topics so far (see the full list below if you'd like to see the previous tutorials). This week, a new tutorial went online about how you can take better Mountain Biking photos.

Behind the Scenes - Rainwear photoshoot and creating fake rain

Last week we had a large commercial shoot outside Seattle, Wa in the foothills of the North Cascades. The shoot was for a large outerwear company's rainwear line. Usually, one thinks it's always grey and rainy in the Pacific Northwest… and usually it is. But when you're shoot requires that ABSOLUTELY MUST BE RAIN, you bring along backups in case mother nature doesn't cooperate.

Below are a handful of behind the scenes images from the shoot to give you a little idea of what goes into faking conditions. Will post the resulting shots as soon as possible.

Seattle Times Cover Photo: Ingrid Backstrom

Last Sunday one of my favorite ski images I've shot ran on the cover of the Seattle Times weekend supplement as part of a story they were running on iconic skier, Ingrid Backstrom.

Really glad to see this image run on a cover… especially in a non-endemic publication like the local news.

 

Billboard: Stevens Pass Resort

It never gets old to see your work blown up larger than life on a billboard!!! I just came across this once last week on my drive into Seattle.  Woohoo!!!

Thanks to model/ skier Amie Engerbretson for always smiling when she skis pow :) Definitely makes the shot a lot more fun.

One of the reasons I first got into photography was to share my vision of the world. To show people how I interpret what I see. But unfortunately, not all photos get their 15 minutes of fame. Some sit in my library and never get the attention that I wanted for them. And what good is a photo that sits in the archives and collects dust? Photos are best used when they're seen by others.
